What’s in a name?

As romance writers, we take special care in naming our heroes and heroines which often help to characterize them. The name ‘Cactus Rose’ has a special meaning to our chapter, too. Pereskia, commonly known as the cactus rose, defies similarities from the cactus genus of which it belongs. The cactus rose is the only cactus with true leaves. Nestled beneath the leaves, one-inch thorns guard the rose-like flowers.

Writers often draw on symbolisms to embellish their work.  The cactus rose could be a symbolic image of a hero guarding a heroine, or perhaps the thorn’s strength versus the softness of the rose. The method a romance writer treats any imagery is unique to that author’s work. Thus, the name ‘Cactus Rose’ gives significance to who we each are – writers with unique voices – unique as the cactus rose.
